The SSC CGL 2026 notification is out. If you are starting your preparation now, the first thing you need to know is this: you do not need to master every maths topic equally. Some topics give you 3–4 questions every single year. Others show up once in a while. Knowing the difference is half the battle.

Here are the five topics that consistently fetch the most marks in SSC CGL Quantitative Aptitude — and how to prepare each one properly.

A Quick Look at the SSC CGL Maths Paper

In SSC CGL Tier 1, Quantitative Aptitude has 25 questions worth 50 marks. Tier 2 has a dedicated Maths paper with more depth. Every question carries equal marks, and there is negative marking (0.50 per wrong answer in Tier 1).

This means two things:

  1. Speed matters — 25 questions in 15 minutes average
  2. Accuracy matters — wrong answers cost you

The safest way to crack it: get very good at high-frequency topics, skip the ones you are unsure about, and never guess blindly.

Topic 1 — Data Interpretation (4–5 questions, Tier 1 + Tier 2)

Data Interpretation (DI) is the most important topic in SSC CGL Maths by a distance. In Tier 2, it gets its own section. In Tier 1, you will see 4–5 questions from tables, bar graphs, pie charts, or line graphs.

The good news: DI is not really a maths topic. It is a reading + calculation topic. You are given data and asked to find percentages, ratios, averages, or differences. There are no formulas to memorize.

How to prepare:

Practice reading data quickly and calculating without a calculator. The most common calculation types are percentage change, ratio comparison, and average. Do at least 10 DI sets before your exam — that covers almost every format you will see.

Topic 2 — Simple Interest and Compound Interest (3–4 questions)

SI/CI is one of the most reliable scoring topics in government exams. The question types are limited and the formulas are fixed.

The four formulas you need:

  • SI = P × R × T / 100
  • CI = P × (1 + R/100)^T − P
  • Difference between CI and SI for 2 years = P × (R/100)²
  • Installment problems (slightly trickier, but follow a pattern)

How to prepare:

Once you know the formulas, it comes down to fast calculation. Practice Vedic maths shortcuts for squaring numbers and finding percentages mentally. Solve 30–40 SI/CI problems from previous year papers — you will start seeing the same patterns repeat.

Topic 3 — Time, Speed and Distance (3–4 questions)

This topic covers trains, boats and streams, and relative speed problems. The questions look complicated but follow very predictable structures.

The core formula is just: Speed = Distance / Time

Everything else — trains crossing platforms, boats going upstream and downstream, two objects meeting — is a variation of this one formula.

How to prepare:

The trick with TSD is visualization. Draw a rough diagram for each problem. Once you can see what is happening physically (two trains approaching each other, a boat rowing against current), the maths becomes straightforward. Practice 25–30 problems across all three sub-types.

Topic 4 — Ratio, Proportion and Partnership (3–4 questions)

Ratio problems appear in almost every competitive exam. In SSC CGL, they show up directly as ratio questions and also hidden inside Mixture & Alligation problems.

These questions are usually fast to solve — often under 30 seconds if you know what you are doing. That makes them high-value in a time-pressured exam.

How to prepare:

Master the concept of "ratio units" — treating the ratio as parts and working backwards. For partnership problems, remember that profit is distributed in the ratio of (capital × time). For mixture problems, learn the alligation method — it is faster than algebra for most questions.

Topic 5 — Geometry and Mensuration (4–5 questions)

Geometry covers triangles, circles, and polygons. Mensuration covers area, perimeter, volume, and surface area of 2D and 3D shapes. Together, they give you 4–5 questions and are worth preparing well.

Geometry requires understanding properties — angle in a semicircle, tangent to a circle, properties of similar triangles. Mensuration requires knowing the right formulas and being careful with units.

How to prepare:

For geometry, make a one-page cheat sheet of all properties and theorems. Read it every day for two weeks. For mensuration, the formulas are mechanical — just make sure you never confuse volume with surface area, and always check if the question asks for diameter or radius.

What About Algebra and Trigonometry?

Algebra (linear equations, quadratic equations, algebraic identities) gives you 3–4 questions. Trigonometry gives you 2–3 questions. Both are important for Tier 2.

For Tier 1, focus on the five topics above first. Once you are confident there, add Algebra and Trigonometry.

The Most Common Preparation Mistake

Spending too much time on topics you find interesting instead of topics the exam actually tests.

SSC CGL Maths is very predictable. The same 6–8 topics show up every year. If you solve the last 5 years of question papers, you will see the pattern clearly. Build your preparation around that pattern — not around a textbook's chapter sequence.

Practice the Right Way

Random practice does not improve your score as much as deliberate practice. After every problem you get wrong, do not just check the answer — understand exactly where your thinking went wrong.
